On Sunday morning, Ashleigh, Alistair, Laura, Eva, Stef, John, and I all caught the 8:30 train to go to Pompeii. It was amazing! We stayed there for four hours, and still didn’t get to see everything. We saw the amphitheater, the brothels, and town square, and so much more. We saw beautiful frescos and architecture, some plaster casts of the volcano victims, and even phallic carvings in the street for good luck! And we had gelato, and a fun lunch in the amphitheater. It was so nice having Laura there, because apart from her enthusiasm being contagious, she had just studied Pompeii, so she was like our own personal tour guide!
Herculaneum was absolutely beautiful. It was more intact, because not a lot of things had been removed for museums, and something about the way it was covered in ash preserved some of the original woodwork! We got to see most of Herculanium, because only about a fifth of it has been uncovered. I loved PompeiI, but I might have enjoyed Herculaneum more!
It was just so amazing spending a whole day walking in the footsteps of an ancient civilization. I’m so happy that I got to go 🙂
